When you’ve finished a few drafts of your novel or story and you feel you’ve poured all your creative energy into it. You want to know if it can be a successful novel or poem. You know you’re not finished, but you don’t know what to fix. Gaps lurk; things may throw a reader out of the story, but it’s too early for an expensive developmental edit. You need feedback in the form of a beta reading or a critique.
But finding beta readers and critique partners is challenging. For genre writers, beta readers need to understand the genres’ tropes, world building, magic systems, and how science within fiction works. For lengthy works, common in some genres, finding beta readers can be more difficult. If you’re a genre writer in a marginalized group, it’s just that much harder.
For poets, finding substantive and meaningful feedback often feels impossible. I will work with you to make sure your poems say what you intend them to say, or to elicit the feelings you approached the piece with.
Beta Reading Summary Report
My beta reading services are more than a typical beta read. I provide written feedback from a perspective of a reader and a genre writer. Ideal for manuscripts at any stage needing genre feedback. I read all sub-genres, and any length: novel, novella, short story.
Feedback is usually two or more
For those looking for in-depth feedback I offer a full critique like those found in a workshop. This comprises multiple close readings of the work delving into not just the mechanics of the piece, but how well it works; what meaning the author may have elicited (intentionally or not). It also reviews choices of voice, style, and form. A critique can sometimes be helpful after you’ve had a work edited and made significant changes but can’t afford a second full edit.
Beta reading feedback is available in three forms:
- Poetry Review (starting at $15 – request a quote based on the number of poems): looks at all aspects of poems, plus reviews the fantastic or speculative elements if it’s genre.
- Beta Read with Summary Report (starting at $15 per 10,000 words): includes characterization, plot, pacing, POV, subplot resolution, and more. For genre works I take a deep look at worldbuilding, magic, and speculative element consistency.
- A Fiction Critique (starting at $20 per 10,000 words): is an in-depth review similar to those given in writing workshops.
In addition toeverything in a Beta Read, you’ll receive feedback on form, meaning, layers, and voice.
